Texas Humor: Living in Austin
Austin is the capital of Texas. And it is home to many true-blooded Texans who had sworn loyalty to their beloved state. It is also the source of the many new and existing Texas humor. However, Texans believe that Austin is not the whole of Texas. Austin maybe the heart of Texas, but it is never the whole of it.
In fact, Texas humor has it that the residents of Austin hate it when they are compared to the people of Houston. And in the same way, they don’t want to be turned into something that Houston is and vice versa. In a Texan point of view, the Texans from Austin are different from the Texan from Houston. And they both hate it when one tries to influence each other. However, the worse case scenario is when people from other States go to Texas and try to manipulate, insult, and change their ways. When this happens, Texans all across the state will unite to extinguish you.
Another good source of Texas humor is the weather. In Texas, it gets very hot in June, July, and August. It could get more than a 120 degrees Fahrenheit outside. However, real Texans are already used to it. What they are not used to are people who constantly complain about the humidity. Never mind the winter in Boston or New York. If you’re in Texas, you have to love the heat. Or you can just pretend you like how it feels soaking in sweat.
There are also Texas humor stories about how people drive back there. In Austin and in most Texas cities for that matter, traffic rules are a little peculiar. Austin drivers stop at the most unlikely instances and step on the gas when all they have to is to stop. The things that make them to stop are the rain, roadside accidents, and snow. They wouldn’t stop, however, at the light that just turned red or when a pedestrian tries to cross the street. Using a turn signal is illegal in Austin too. Drivers there claim that these signals are nothing but distracting. So if you need to turn, never use the light. Just take extra care and pray hard that nobody bumps you when you do. And don’t forget that you should not park your car anywhere in Austin, unless of course, you want it towed.
Another major Texas humor about Austin is its title being the Music Capital of the World. Texans believe that Austin gave birth to music giants such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Janis Joplin, and Clifford Antone. So whenever you want to come and visit, don’t forget to pay your respects.
